Xanthi paints the summit Green
Panathinaikos soared to the top of soccer?s Super League table on Sunday night after beating Atromitos while champion Olympiakos suffered a defeat at Xanthi.
The Greens have gone two points ahead at the standings with a game in hand, too, after bending the resistance of Atromitos with a 1-0 score through a Quincy Owusu-Abeyie volley at the 72nd minute.
They have also gone five games without conceding a goal. If they also beat Levadiakos on Wednesday in a game postponed since October, they will go five points clear.
Depleted Olympiakos lost 1-0 at Xanthi owing to a beautiful Panayiotis Vlachodimos strike at the 55th minute after a great through ball by Thodoris Vassilakakis. The Reds felt they should have got a penalty in injury time that the referee denied Vassilis Torosidis.
AEK dropped two points at Ergotelis after a 1-1 draw yesterday, as its Nikos Liberopoulos opener was leveled by Nikos Katsikokeris, allowing PAOK to close the gap from the third spot to just two points courtesy of its 1-0 victory over visiting Panionios on Saturday. Stefanos Athanasiadis got on the scoresheet for PAOK.
In other weekend games, Asteras Tripolis downed PAS Giannina 2-1 thanks to an injury-time winner by Ilias Solakis, Aris defeated Doxa Dramas 3-1 away through a Neri Castillo brace, Panetolikos drew 1-1 at home with Kerkyra and OFI saw off Levadiakos with a 2-0 score at Livadia.
