Greek women lose to Italy in Euro final

The women?s national water polo team could not add the European Championship to its world trophy and lost 13-10 to Italy in the final held at Eindhoven on Saturday.

Greece was a shadow of its usual self and the Italians made the most of its weaknesses by containing the Greek stars in attack and forcing Greek keeper Elena Kouvdou to suffer a bad day and get substituted in the third period of the game, with the score at 8-2 in the Italians? favor.

With the score at 10-4 the players of coach Giorgos Morfesis started a comeback, but the distance was far too big for them to cover in less than two periods.

Eventually the world champion had to settle for the silver medal, just like in the previous European championship in Croatia in 2010.

The national team will now need to focus on preparations for the Olympic qualification tournament to take place in April in Trieste, Italy.

Earlier on Saturday the men?s team lost to Germany 9-6 in a game for positions 5 to 8.
