Greeks grab silver in Open Water Europeans

Greece is rapidly establishing itself as a global force in open water swimming, after clinching the silver medal in the team event at the European Championship in Italy on Friday.

The national team, consisting of Kelly Araouzou, Marios Kalafatis and Giorgos Arniakos, finished second to host Italy in the 5-kilometer event at Piombino, clocking 59 minutes and 57.1 seconds. Germany was third.

Despite the absence of Greece’s Olympians in the sport, Spyros Gianniotis and Marianna Lymperta, coaches Nikos Gemelos and Nikos Sideris presented a very competitive team at Piombino that secured a fantastic result for Greece.

In the women’s individual 10 km event Araouzou finished seventh on Wednesday in what was her debut appearance in a European Open Water Championship.
