Women’s youth team triumphs in world championship

Greece can look forward to another decade of global domination in women’s water polo, as after the world championship the women’s side won last year, the national youth women’s team won the gold medal in the world youth championship in Perth, Australia on Sunday.

The Greek girls defeated Hungary 9-5 in the final and showed they are a cut above the rest in the world.

The players of coach Giorgos Morfesis, who has doubled his world championship triumphs after leading the women’s team to glory 16 months ago in China, finished the tournament unbeaten.

This is the same team that last year had won the European championship, too, in Madrid. “We came to win the cup and we did it,” said player Margarita Plevritou a few hours after the final.

Upon their arrival to Athens on Monday the young Greek internationals made it clear that their aim is to win the Olympic gold, that has eluded Greece given the women’s team elimination from the London Olympics earlier this year.

The dark side of the story is the internationals’ complaint that they feel abandoned by the state and that their main sponsors are their own parents.
