Veria thrashes Panathinaikos as Olympiakos marches on

Veria produced one of the season’s biggest upsets by putting three goals past Panathinaikos on Sunday, while champion Olympiakos returned to victories after coming from behind at Panionios.

Panathinaikos was coming off a solid display against Olympiakos in the 2-2 draw at the derby a week earlier, but on this Sunday the Greens produced their worst display of the season.

Veria, promoted only last summer to the Super League, pulled the Greens apart leading 3-0 after 55 minutes thanks to a brace by Ilias Ioannou and a Kenan Bargan goal and eased to the end of the game, for one of the Macedonian team’s most famous wins in its history. The result has brought Panathinaikos back to the wrong end of the table.

At Nea Smyrni on Saturday Panionios led through Christos Aravidis but Olympiakos equalized courtesy of a Panayiotis Spyropoulos own goal five minutes later and snatched victory with former Panionios striker Rafik Djebbour eight minutes from time.

AEK remained in the drop zone as it drew 1-1 at home with Atromitos on Sunday, after Matias Iglesias canceled out Andreas Stamatis’s goal for AEK.

Panthrakikos imposed itself over host Kerkyra on Corfu with a 2-0 score, Levadiakos edged out Platanias 1-0 at home and OFI saw off Asteras Tripolis 2-0 at Iraklio. Aris and Xanthi shared a goalless draw.

On Monday PAS Giannina greets PAOK.
