Olympiakos overcomes Panionios to stay unbeaten
Olympiakos overcame Panionios at home on Monday and retained its unbeaten record in the Greek basketball league, staying two points ahead of second-placed Panathinaikos.
Showing its usual face in domestic games, where it dominates games from start to finish, Olympiakos imposed itself on visiting Panionios with an 87-73 score for its 12th win in 12 games.
Panathinaikos is now left alone in second, after Panionios’s loss and the Greens’ 67-59 win at Kolossos Rhodes, despite their mediocre performance in the absence of captain Dimitris Diamantidis.
PAOK stayed fourth by overcoming the strong challenge of visiting Apollon Patras (68-61), while crosstown rival Aris defeated Kavala away 85-77.
The best game of the weekend took place at Peristeri, where the local team beat AGO Rethymnou 70-69 thanks to a last-gasp effort by Nondas Papantoniou that found the target.
Ilissiakos came away from Drama with a precious 83-80 victory that saw KAO Dramas coach Giorgos Kalafatakis resign and all the local team’s players appear in the post-game press conference to apologize for their performance.
Finally, Ikaros came from behind to defeat promoted Panelefsiniakos 85-78.
