Maciulis leads Greens to triumph in Berlin

Lithuanian Jonas Maciulis scored 28 points to lead Panathiniakos to a 79-73 win at Alba Berlin on Wednesday, its third win in four games in the top 16 of the Euroleague.

Playing once again without captain Dimitris Diamantidis, Panathinaikos had Maciulis filling in with his impressive scoring, particularly outside the three-point line, making six out of eight shots.

The Greens eased to victory as after a tied first period (23-23) it edged ahead 45-39 at half-time and took its lead to nine points in the third period (65-56), while slowing down in the last quarter: James Gist scored a crucial three-pointer at 68-65 to make it 71-65 and banish any thought of an Alba comeback in the end.

Forward Sofoklis Schortsanitis showed he was affected by his absence due to injury, but did manage to notch up seven points for the six-time European champion.

Panathinaikos fans made a lot of noise in the O2 arena in Berlin and certainly enjoyed their team’s first away win in this second stage of the competition.
