Greek defender Papastathopoulos joins Borussia Dortmund

Greek defender Sokratis Papastathopoulos has joined Champions League runners-up Borussia Dortmund from German rivals Werder Bremen.

The 24-year-old Greece international has signed a five-year contract for a reported fee of 8 million plus 2 million euro add-ons.

“I had two years at Werder from which I personally profited very much,” said Papastathopoulos, who has in the past played for Italy’s Genoa and AEK Athens.

“Now it was time for me to take the next step,” he said.

Papasthathopoulos made 59 appearances in two years in the Bundesliga for Werder, scoring two goals.

Dortmund lost 2-1 in the final minutes to German rival Bayern Munich at the Champions League final in London on Saturday.
