Sofoklis Schortsanitis…

Sofoklis Schortsanitis, back from the USA, where he was chosen by the Los Angeles Clippers at the NBA draft, but with no guaranteed contract, will lead Greece’s under-19 team at the seventh World Junior Basketball championships beginning today in Thessaloniki. Greece will play against Puerto Rico today, Angola tomorrow and Iran on Saturday and is a favorite to advance out of this group and into the quarterfinals. Greece has hosted the competition once before, in 1995, when a team led by center Efthymis Rentzias, now with the Philadelphia 76ers, won the gold medal from Australia and easily defeated a US team led by current NBA stars Vince Carter and Stephon Marbury.
