Panionios moves out of trouble, Aris doesn’t

Panionios banished any relegation fears with its 2-1 win over struggling Veria on Thursday, while Aris wasted a great opportunity to move off the bottom of the table drawing 1-1 at home with Asteras Tripolis.

The Nea Smyrni club had striker Christos Aravidis to thank for both goals as Panionios played its first game without coach Nikos Pantelis. He got sacked after its Sunday loss at Asteras and has been replaced by his assistant, Constantinos Panagopoulos. Panionios has now climbed to the ninth place.

Veria equalized through Ben Mohamed from the penalty spot, but conceded the second goal when it was reduced to 10 men and remains in the drop zone.

It still is two points ahead of Aris, that fell behind to Asteras through a Sebastian Setti first-half goal. David Aganzo missed a penalty sending the ball wide on the hour mark but redeemed himself five minutes later scoring the equalizer, although the popular Thessaloniki club needed all three points from the game: It has collected no more than 11 points in 16 matches in the Super League.

At the other end of the table, champion Olympiakos announced on Thursday the extension to top scorer Costas Mitroglou’s contract until 2017.
