Filippidis is pole vault world champion

Costas Filippidis is the new world indoor champion in men’s pole vault after his triumph on Saturday at the championship held at Sopot in Poland.

The Greek star cleared 5.80 meters to win his first ever world championship medal having cleared all heights at the first attempt.

The 28-year-old stated after his victory: “This medal is very important for Greek track and field and my country in general. I am glad that I have made many Greeks happy with this performance.”

Filippidis had always been part of the major finals in the last decades in the sport, but had never climbed to the top of the world before. This was also the fifth gold medal for Greece in the championship’s history.

In the long jump Louis Tsatoumas narrowly missed out on the podium as he ended up fourth with his best jump measuring 8.13 meters.
