Panathinaikos, Asteras Tripolis notch up vital wins in Europa League

Thursday proved a very productive night for two of the three Greek teams performing in the Europa League as Panathinaikos and Asteras Tripolis secured vital wins in the first legs of their playoff ties.

Panathinaikos was led by its mercurial Swedish striker Marcus Berg, who scored all four of the Greens’ goals in a 4-1 home win over Midtjylland from Denmark. Panathinaikos’s win was even more impressive for the fact that the Greek side went behind 1-0 in the match.

There was also a home win for Asteras Tripolis, who defeated Israeli side Maccabi Tel Aviv 2-0. Pablo Masa and Giorgos Zisopoulos scored the goals for the Greek team.

PAOK was left with plenty of work to do in the return leg in Thessaloniki after losing 1-0 at Zimbru Chisinau in Moldova.
