Petrounias wins Greece’s first gold in European Games

Gymnast Lefteris Petrounias won Greece’s first gold medal in the inaugural European Games that take place in Baku, Azerbaijan, by finishing first in the rings on Saturday.

The Greek champion, who was also Greece’s flagcarrier at the opening ceremony last week, collected 15,633 points to leave his nearest opponent, Russia’s Nikita Ignatyev, 300 points behind him.

Teammate Vlasis Maras won silver a little later finishing second in the horizontal bar.

Greece has also earned a bronze medal as its women’s water polo team won the third-place playoff with Italy with an 8-7 score on Saturday. Countries were represented on youth level at this event.
