Panathinaikos wins Greek Cup in basketball by record margin in final

Panathinaikos won a record 17th Greek Cup in basketball on Sunday defeating second-tier Faros Keratsiniou 101-54 in the final at the Olympic Sports Hall.

The Greens were always the favorites against the competition’s surprise package and secured a record winning margin for a Greek Cup final, given also that the game took place at their home court.

The match was a no-contest as Faros, relying mainly on top-division veterans, could not match in-form Panathinaikos at any point during the game.

Faros, that eliminated five top-flight teams on its way to the final, is the favorite to get promoted to the Basket League, and the presence at the stands of hundreds of children from schools of Keratsini, a neighborhood in Piraeus, gave Greek fans a healthy image of sports that was necessary after the riots recently seen in soccer.

As for the Greens, they may have had a walk in the park in this final, but to get there they had to eliminate champion Olympiakos away in the quarterfinals and see off Aris at home in the semis.
