Sports Digest: World-class jump by Tentoglou
TRACK & FIELD: Teenager Miltos Tentoglou produced a new national Under-20 record in the men’s long jump and the fourth best jump in the world this year measuring 8.29 meters at the National Championship that took place over the weekend in Patra. In the women’s long jump Voula Papachristou surprisingly lost her crown to Lili Alexouli who measured 6.44 m., against Papachristou’s 6.29 m. Katerina Stefanidi registered a championship record in the women’s pole vault clearing 4.81 m.
BASKETBALL: Despite its 59-56 loss to Slovenia on Saturday, Greece has made the second round of the women’s Eurobasket in the Czech Republic. On Monday it is facing group leader France.
BEACH VOLLEYBALL: Dimitris Niopas and Thodoris Papadimitriou won the 1st Masters Tournament of the Greek Championship on Spetses, named Spetses Golden Cup, on Sunday beating Panayiotis Ioannidis and Iasonas Kanellos 2-1 in the final. In the women’s event the Cypriot pair of Mariota Angelopoulou and Manolina Constantinou won the final against Greeks Dimitra Manavi and Aliki Spiliotopoulou with a 2-0 score.
