Livaja settles AEK’s battle with PAOK

Atromitos remained on top of the Super League for one more weekend, but had AEK joining it there after the Yellows defeated PAOK 1-0 on Sunday.

The weekend’s big match at the Olympic Stadium was a rough affair with one goal and three red cards. AEK was a man down due to the red shown to Sergio Araujo from the 8th minute, but still managed to score, as Marko Livaja connected with a Andre Simoes cross to tap the ball home on the 25th.

PAOK then had Carlos Zambrano receive his marching orders, and put some pressure on AEK to equalize, without any substance in its dominance. Eventually the Thessaloniki club was reduced to nine men courtesy of substitute Diego Biseswar who lost his temper in injury time.

AEK is now on 20 points, the same as Atromitos that drew 0-0 with Panionios in Peristeri on Saturday.

PAOK is on 18, while Olympiakos rose to 17 after thrashing bottom team Platanias Hanion 5-1 on Sunday, goals coming from Felipe Pardo (twice), Alberto Botia, Pape Cisse and Karim Ansarifard for Olympiakos, and from Yiannis Papanikolaou for Platanias.

A late goal by Juan Munafo gave Asteras Tripolis a precious home win over Panathinaikos (1-0) on Sunday lifting the Peloponnesian club off the bottom of the table, while Panathinaikos remains winless on the road after five times of asking. It lies seventh with 13 points.

In other weekend games Xanthi scored three times in the first half to beat Panetolikos 3-1 away, Apollon Smyrnis downed PAS Giannina 4-3 at home and Kerkyra shared a 1-1 draw with Larissa.

On Monday Levadiakos clashes with neighboring Lamia.
