’04 volleyball draw out

Olympic volleyball champion Serbia-Montenegro will face Poland to open its bid to retain the men’s gold under the country’s new name, organizers announced yesterday. Serbia-Montenegro – which competed four years ago as Yugoslavia – was placed in Pool A along with Tunisia, Argentina, Poland, France and Greece for the August 15-23 men’s tournament. Host Greece qualified automatically. Pool B comprises Brazil, Italy, the Netherlands, Russia, Australia and the USA. Serbia-Montenegro will play Poland on the 15th of the month, France on the 17th, Tunisia on the 20th, Argentina on the 21st, and Greece on the 23rd. For the August 14-22 women’s tournament, defending Olympic champion Cuba was placed in Pool B along with China, the Dominican Republic, Germany, Russia and the USA. Cuba will play Germany on the 14th, Russia on 16th, Germany on the 18th, the Dominican Republic on the 20th, and the USA on the 22nd. The Pool A women’s group includes Greece, South Korea, Japan, Brazil, Italy and Kenya. The top four teams from each preliminary group will advance to the quarterfinals. (AP)
