Water polo team success
The national water polo team captured third place at a World League tournament in the US after stunning Italy 12-9 in a playoff for third place yesterday. The result came as an upset for the Italians, who had defeated Greece in their previous eight encounters. Olympic and world champion Hungary defeated Serbia and Montenegro 12-8 in the World League’s final. Following Greece’s win, various squad members offered confident remarks about the team’s prospects at the upcoming Athens Olympics. But the Greek side’s Italian coach Sandro Campagna remained reserved. «Nothing extraordinary occurred. It was a deserved victory. We made mistakes in offense. We’re making good progress but need to work more on game strategy and fitness,» said Campagna. «It was my first victory with Greece against Italy and I hope it won’t be the last,» he added. To reach the tournament’s semifinals, Greece narrowly defeated the US 13-12 after a penalty shootout was needed to break an 8-8 deadlock at the end of regular time.
