Olympic press facility gets new life as museum

The Greek government is to build a world athletics museum at one of the main sites used for the Athens Olympics, Alternate Greek Culture Minister Fanni Palli-Petralia announced yesterday. After talks last month between the Greek government and the president of the International Association of Athletics Federations, Lamine Diack, it was agreed that a museum will be constructed in the building that housed the press center in August’s Summer Games, which is located close to the Athens Olympic Stadium. The museum, which will have a surface area of up to 4,000 square meters, is due for completion in 2005, the International Association of Athletics Federations reported. The IAAF also decided to accept a proposal by the Greek government to organize an athletics competition every summer comprising shot put, discus and javelin events on the site of the ancient Olympics.
