Iraklis wraps up an almost perfect season

Iraklis volleyball club wrapped up an almost perfect season yesterday by winning the Greek league title just weeks after also triumphing in the Greek Cup. The Thessaloniki side, which, quite sensationally, remained undefeated in domestic competition this season, was crowned league champion following a 3-0 (25-23, 26-24, 25-22) home win over Olympiakos for a clean sweep in their best-of-five final series. Iraklis went into yesterday’s match after a tense 3-2 away win (18-25, 25-22, 17-25, 25-20, 17-15) in Game Two of the final series. Yesterday’s win, though, reflected a side determined to clean up as quickly as possible. It would have been a perfect season for Iraklis had the club triumphed in its recent European Champions League final. The Greek team, however, was deprived of the European title by French club Tours. In its season-long domestic winning streak, Iraklis won all its league games, 31 in total, and cup ties.
