Aris fined and shown way to 2nd division

A sports tribunal yesterday heavily sanctioned finalist Aris for a pitch invasion and violence by fans during a league match against Thessaloniki rival Iraklis last weekend, effectively relegating the club to the second division. The tribunal’s decision to deduct three points from the side’s tally means that, with a round of play to go, Aris has no hope of surviving in the first division. Aris, which plays in tomorrow’s cup final against Olympiakos, was also ruled the loser of last weekend’s match, fined 100,000 euros, and served a fan-ban for its next six home games. The club can appeal. During the pitch invasion, five Aris fans were arrested for attacking police and Iraklis players. Four fans were arrested for throwing stones, bottles, firecrackers, and other objects at Iraklis players and police officers. The fifth individual was detained for assaulting an Iraklis player. The match was eventually abandoned by the referee after a long wait following injuries to two Iraklis players who were hospitalized.
