Comfortable win despite poor play

Despite putting in a mediocre performance, the men’s national water polo team defeated China with a comfortable score of 11-4 score in its opening match at the Men’s Water Polo World League in Montreal yesterday. Greece, which ended fourth in last summer’s Athens Olympic Games following a narrow 6-5 loss to Russia, will meet Germany today in a crucial encounter for a higher place in the tournament. Following his team’s win over China, the national team’s Italian coach Alessandro Campagna said he was content, but admitted the team’s performance could have been sharper. Team captain Giorgos Afroudakis said Greece failed to implement its game plan. «We did absolutely nothing of all the things we learned at training and, moreover, we failed to cooperate,» Afroudakis said. «Fortunately, the draw didn’t put us up against a stronger side in the opening game, because we may have had problems.»
