Greece set to play Australia for fifth place

Greece defeated Germany 9-4 and moved on to face Australia in today’s fifth-place game in the women’s water polo world championships in Montreal. The Aussies defeated Olympic champion Italy 10-9, winning it on Elise Norwood’s goal with 1:55 remaining. Germany will play Italy for seventh place. The United States moved a step closer to defending its world title by rallying from a two-goal deficit to beat Russia 10-8 in the semifinals on Wednesday. The USA will meet Hungary in the gold-medal game late tonight. The Americans lost 9-8 when the teams met in preliminary play. The Hungarians defeated Canada 9-7 in front of a raucous red-clad home crowd that stood most of the game, waving maple leaf flags. Mercedes Stieber led Hungary with three goals. Rita Dravucz and Agnes Bravik added two each. Johanne Begin scored two fourth-quarter goals for Canada, which will play Russia for the bronze medal today. Late last night, Greece’s men’s team faced Olympic and world champion Hungary in a semifinal match. (AP)
