Benfica drops Takis Fyssas from squad

Defender Takis Fyssas, a member of Greece’s national team which won last summer’s Euro 2004 soccer tournament in Portugal, has been dropped from the squad of Portuguese club Benfica for the new season. Last week, Benfica’s Dutch coach Ronald Koeman had warned that Fyssas, a 32-year-old left back, was not part of his plans for the new season. Fyssas, who joined Benfica from Panathinaikos two years ago, was absent from yesterday’s training session. Koeman had asked Benfica’s administration to grant the Greek player leave so that he could seek a new club. According to reports from Portugal, Fyssas is currently assessing offers extended by various clubs around Europe, including two Greek teams. None of these proposals, however, have been disclosed.
