Liverpool in hunt for ‘Stelios’

LIVERPOOL – Liverpool are in talks with Bolton in a bid to bring Greek midfielder Stelios Yiannakopoulos to Anfield. Bolton recently dismissed an offer for the 31-year-old from Manchester City, and Liverpool boss Rafael Benitez is cautious about the chances of completing a deal before next Wednesday’s transfer deadline. But Benitez has made a right-sided midfielder a priority and, after missing out on Luis Figo, Giannakopoulos fits the bill. Talks have taken place at management and board level so far, although it is not known whether a fee has been discussed. «Our chief executive Rick Parry is talking with their chairman [Phil Gartside] about the possibility of a deal,» said Benitez. «I also spoke to Sam Allardyce about the player last night because we need to know if he’d be available. At this moment Stelios is one possibility for us.» Benitez is also seeking at least one new defender before the end of the month, and he told club website www.liverpoolfc.tv: «We are working hard to strengthen the squad before the deadline.» (AFP)
