Panathinaikos tops women’s volleyball for second season

Panathinaikos women’s volleyball club clinched its second successive league-and-cup double triumph last night following a 3-0 win over Markopoulo to win a best-of-five league final series with a 3-1 score. Dominant throughout the season, Panathinaikos conceded just two defeats, one in the league final series and another earlier in the season. «For two years now, we’ve been through plenty with the girls. There were bitter moments, but the joy overweighs these,» remarked the team’s coach, Dimitris Bahramis, following yesterday’s decisive victory. «They [team members] played with clear minds and won. They implemented everything tried out during practice last week. Even though they slackened temporarily, I was sure we would win,» he added. Commenting on whether he would carry on at Panathinaikos next season, Bahramis did not offer details, but hinted that the club was his home. «First we’ll all see what we want – the administration, myself, the players – what makes us happy,» said Bahramis. «For somebody who was born a Panathinaikos fan, the club is his or her Ithaca.»  Meanwhile, the club’s administration has been summoned to a sports tribunal tomorrow for trouble caused during the final series, including a verbal attack by Bahramis on the referees.
