Baghdatis through to semis at Wimbledon

Cypriot tennis star Marcos Baghdatis reached the semifinals at Wimbledon with a gritty four-set victory (6-1, 5-7, 7-6, 6-2) last night over the tournament’s sixth seed, Australian Lleyton Hewitt, the men’s singles champion at the Grand Slam event four years ago. In another quarterfinal match completed yesterday, top seed Roger Federer performed superbly to defeat seventh seed Croat Mario Ancic in straight sets (6-4, 6-4, 6-4). Baghdatis, ranked 16 in the world, will now face either Spaniard Rafael Nadal, the world’s No 2, or 22-seeded Finn Jarkko Nieminen.
