A jubilant Panathinaikos fan greets Spanish midfielder Victor Sanchez at Athens Airport yesterday. Formerly with Deportivo La Coruna, the 30-year-old Spaniard signed a two-year contract with Panathinaikos, the club said yesterday. No financial details were disclosed but the newspaper Goal said the player’s annual salary will be about 1.1 million euros. ‘My new team has a reputation in Europe, which is why I chose to come to Athens rather than join Espanyol,’ Sanchez told reporters. ‘The reception I’ve received from all until now has been amazing and I promise to return the favor on the pitch.’ Panathinaikos finished third in last season’s Greek first division and will play in the UEFA Cup.
