Greece stays afloat at Europeans despite loss
The men’s national water polo team lost 14-11 to Italy in the final round of group play at the European Championships in Belgrade last night but advanced to the next stage by ending third in its six-team group. Italy ended second and Hungary captured Group B’s top spot to advance straight to the semifinals. In the other group, Serbia-Montenegro reached the semifinals as winner of Group A. Spain ended second after Romania lost 13-5 to the host nation last night. Romania captured third spot. As runner-up of Group A, Spain meets Greece, Group B’s third-placed team, tomorrow for one of the two remaining semifinal berths. Italy will meet Romania for the other semifinal berth. In women’s competition, Greece plays Spain today for a semifinal place.
