No surprise results in basketball league
There were no surprise results in yesterday’s opening day of play for this year’s top-level Greek basketball league, the A1. AEK fought back to beat Panellinios, 66-61, away. The hosts held a lead of between eight and 10 points for most of the game, but AEK hit back with a 13-1 run in the final 10 minutes of play for its five-point victory. Playing away, last year’s runner-up Olympiakos defeated Larissa 94-83, while PAOK beat newly promoted Aegaleo, 81-75 at home. PAOK held a commanding 19-point lead (47-28) at half time, but had to survive a serious challenge. Panionios defeated Makedonikos away with a 68-54 score. Makedonikos is still scrambling to build a squad after the mass exodus of last season’s team because of financial woes. Apollon, at home, was the winner of the local derby in Patras, western Greece, with a 79-69 win over Olympiada. Round One is to be completed today with Panathinaikos greeting Aris and Maroussi hosting Olympia Larissa.
