Greeks to face all-star team

The reigning European basketball champion, Greece, also a runner-up at last summer’s worlds, will face an all-star European team here in the summer, FIBA Europe, the sport’s federation for the continent, announced in a statement yesterday. The friendly game will be held in Greece either on June 30 or July 1, FIBA Europe said. CSKA Moscow star Theodoris Papaloukas, one of Greece’s key contributors to the European title triumph in 2005, will receive his FIBA Europe’s Player of the Year award during the friendly game’s proceedings, the statement said. Papaloukas recently topped a FIBA Europe poll. Greece’s national team, which won the European basketball title in 1987, the country’s first ever major team triumph, may also play a curtain-raiser match on the day, the statement said.
