Russians rebound to snatch victory

The Greek women’s waterpolo team, a silver medalist at the 2004 Olympics, was deprived of a semifinal place at the World Championships in Melbourne after Russia, the European champion, clinched a 10-9 win in a quarterfinal clash yesterday. Greece led throughout the game and held an 8-5 lead into the third quarter but froze in the final period of play. Russia edged ahead for the first time in the game with less than a minute to play. Also through to the quarters, the Greek men’s team meets Serbia today.
