Top goal scorer Gekas on spree in Bundesliga
Greece striker Fanis Gekas, the German Bundesliga’s top scorer, continued with his merry scoring spree over the weekend with two goals in Bochum’s impressive 4-1 away win over Leverkusen. The result lifted the Greek soccer player’s uncelebrated German club three points above the relegation zone. Gekas, who has now scored a total of 16 goals with Bochum this season, a large proportion coming in recent rounds, helped his side to secure victory over Leverkusen by adding Bochum’s third and fourth goals in the 4-1 triumph. Bochum shot ahead to an early 2-0 lead with goals in the eighth and 16th minutes before Gekas added his club’s third just six minutes later. Leverkusen narrowed to 3-1 in the 62nd minute, but Gekas ruined any sense of hope for the home team by making it 4-1 for Bochum two minutes before the end of regular playing time. Gekas moved to Bochum last season, on loan from Athens club Panathinaikos, despite his scoring ability in domestic competition.
