Tribute match for Zagorakis

A number of the Greek Super League’s leading soccer players will gather today for an all-star game between local and foreign stars at Thessaloniki’s Kaftantzogleio Stadium as a tribute to Theodoris Zagorakis. The former Greece captain, who led the national team to its Euro 2004 triumph, recently retired from the national team and now appears set to end his club-level career. Zagorakis, who has spent the past couple of seasons at Thessaloniki club PAOK, has not yet decided whether he will retire. It is believed that the player may stop competing and focus on administrative matters at PAOK, which is currently facing financial troubles. Greece is also expected to play a friendly international in the summer to honor its former captain. But the game’s details remain undetermined. Proceedings for tonight’s tribute game begin at a midday hotel function, where the event’s sponsors will pay tribute to Zagorakis. The all-star game, scheduled to begin at 6.30 p.m., will be preceded by a curtain-raiser match featuring women’s teams representing east and west Thessaloniki.
