Lying low in the relegation zone, OFI axes coach

OFI coach Reiner Maurer was sacked yesterday, a day after the Cretan team suffered its fourth consecutive defeat that has sunk it to the Super League’s relegation zone. The club’s president, Fanouris Vatsinas, and the German coach reached a mutual agreement to terminate Maurer’s contract at a meeting between the two men yesterday. Maurer, whose tenure at OFI lasted 16 months, led the club to a satisfactory seventh in the Super League last season with 42 points from 30 games. So far this season, the Cretan team is on seven points from eight games. Giorgos Paraschos, who started the season at PAOK, Vangelis Vlachos and Yiannis Samaras, the father of Manchester City’s Giorgos Samaras, have been named as possible candidates for the coaching job at OFI.
