Sports writers name the country’s finest
Hoopster Dimitris Diamantidis, triple-jumper Chryso-pigi Devetzi, along with the national soccer team and coach Otto Rehhagel were named the country’s best in sport for 2007 by PSAT, the Greek sportswriters’ association, at a ceremony in Athens yesterday. Diamantidis, who was crowned European basketball champion with Panathinaikos earlier this year, was voted Best Male Athlete. Devetzi, a bronze medalist in the women’s triple jump at the Worlds in Osaka last summer, won the Best Female Athlete award for a third consecutive year. Rehhagel topped the voting for Best Coach. His team, the reigning European soccer champion which qualified for the Euro 2008 finals where it will defend its title next summer, won the Best Team award.
