Panathinaikos goes clear in A1 league

Panathinaikos blew away crosstown rival Olympiakos on Sunday night to take a firm grip on top spot in the A1 basketball league. The Greens dominated the game and came away with a comfortable 64-82 win against the Reds. It was Panathinaikos’s 16th win from 16 games in Greece. The reigning champion looked a cut above its opponent, which suffered its first domestic defeat since national team coach Panayiotis Yiannakis took over at the Piraeus club. Panathinaikos was in the lead from start to finish and Olympiakos only threatened to come back into the game in the second quarter when it narrowed the gap to just one point. But the Greens stepped on the gas again in the second half. Kennedy Winston was the outstanding player for the visitors, scoring 26 points, which included seven from eight 3-pointers.
