Panathinaikos slump must be soon reversed

Panathinaikos will need to recover soon if the basketball club is to repeat any of last season’s triumphs. The Athens team, winner of last season’s European title for the fourth time in its history, as well as the Greek league and national cup, has suddenly slumped after looking untroubled both in domestic and European play. Undefeated until recently in the Greek league, Panathinaikos lost a second consecutive game last weekend against Maroussi, but remains first. The Athens team will have to lose at least two more of its remaining nine regular season games to surrender top spot ahead of the playoffs. But the situation is now dire in the Euroleague, where Panathinaikos has lost two of its three Group D games in the Round of 16. A win against visiting Turkish club Efes Pilsen on Thursday will be needed if the Greek team is to bolster its hopes of a place in the quarterfinals.
