Greece can’t stop France

LAUSANNE (AP) – France’s youngsters beat Greece 3-1 yesterday, smoothing their way to a semifinal place in the European Under-21 soccer championship. Sylvain Armand opened the scoring for the French in the 37th minute, looping a cross over Greek goalkeeper Stefanos Kotsolis. Three minutes later, teammate Pierre-Alain Frau put France two ahead after picking up a volley from Armand. Frau added a further goal in the second half, after Cyril Chapuis flicked a shot over the Greek defense in the 61st minute. Greece’s honor-saving goal came in the 84th minute, after defender Christos Patsatzoglou curled a direct free kick past helpless French goalkeeper Mickael Landreau. France beat the Czech Republic 2-0 Thursday and now tops Group 2. The team’s final group match is against Belgium tomorrow. Greece is at the bottom of the table, with no points, having lost its earlier game against Belgium 2-1. It faces the Czechs tomorrow.
