Dimitris Deliyiannis’s Sony Vaio-Chicago Guapa boat finishes first in an excellent Aegean Rally

Sailing’s Aegean Rally ended yesterday in triumph for the Greek crew of the Sony Vaio-Chicago Guapa. After a tough race of 10 days and over 400 nautical miles, skipper Dimitris Deliyiannis and his seven-member crew finished first among the 50 boats that had entered the rally. The second place in the ORCi A category went to Wind-Zantino, which was followed by Superfast, both Greek boats as well. Following the boats’ arrival in Sounion on Saturday from their course across the Aegean to Lipsoi, in the Dodecanese, the race concluded yesterday with two windward/leeward races in Faliron Bay. Strong northerly winds made sailing quite tough for all the crews, especially with a sudden change in wind direction during the first race, with one of the boats, Aces, tearing its front sail in a sudden gust of wind, resulting in it dropping from the top-three place it had sneaked into. «This was a perfectly organized event with the quality level very high, the competition very strong and the boats battling all the time,» said Olympian skipper Deliyiannis. He added that «we also had a great time at the various islands the race stopped at along the way,» referring to the Aegean islands of Naxos, Lipsoi and Tinos.
