Relegation in tennis’ Davis Cup

The inexperienced national tennis team suffered a 5-0 loss to Hungary in Thessaloniki and was relegated to Davis Cup’s Europe / Africa Group 3 yesterday. With top players Constantinos Economidis and Alexander Jakupovic unable to take part, Greece fielded teenagers Constantinos Mikos and Haris Kapoyiannis, but failed to win a single set in any of the five matches, despite the home advantage. After the two singles wins on Friday, Hungary determined the relegation playoff on Saturday with Kornel Bardoczky and Robert Varga beating the Greek duo 6-1, 6-1, 6-1. Then yesterday, Mikos lost 6-2, 6-1 to Denes Lukacs and Kapoyiannis succumbed 6-1, 6-2 to Sebo Kiss.
