Under-19 letdown, England wins 3-0

The Greek soccer Under-19 team failed to meet expectations yesterday, as it suffered a 3-0 defeat to England in the European Championship in the Czech Republic. The result means that Greece lies at the bottom of the group’s standings and has been eliminated from the tournament, while it is also out of the World Under-20 Championship to take place next year in Egypt. With two draws in as many group games, Greece entered the match against England knowing a win would take it through to the semifinals. Yet last year’s finalists were not as successful this time, as England took the lead at the 47th minute through a header by Ben Mee. The English youngsters doubled their lead at the 67th minute via a spot-kick by West Ham United’s Freddie Sears and sealed their triumph in the 85th minute courtesy of Daniel Sturridge. The Greek boys had little to offer in attack and coach Alexis Alexiou obviously missed influential midfielder Sotiris Ninis, who had been suspended for this game.
