420 Worlds sets sail

Just two days after the successful conclusion of the Aegean Rally, Greece is the host of another major sailing event as of today – the 420 World Championship. Hosted by the Nautical Club of Tzitzifies Kallithea (NOTK), the championship’s official opening ceremony is scheduled for tomorrow evening. The winners will emerge on Thursday, July 31. The race will take place at the Olympic Marina in Faliron, where the Olympic sailing events were hosted four years ago. Participation in the event has broken all past records, since 25 countries will take part with 180 boats and a total of 360 sailors – both male and female – a figure that has amazed the organizers. Greece is entering 14 men’s and 14 women’s crews in the championship. The non-Olympic 420 class is flourishing all over the world and is the transitional stage for sailors before entering the 470 Olympic class, in which Greece, and specifically NOTK, has the Olympic gold medal of 2004 to show off, won by Sofia Bekatorou.
