Daniilidou to play in Beijing

Lena Daniilidou has vowed to return to action in time for next month’s Olympic Games, having recovered from surgery to her injured knee. The Greek tennis champion announced her decision to take part both in singles and doubles play, with Anna Gerasimou as her partner in the latter. This will be the first competition she will enter after her four-month absence, and her third straight Olympics after Sydney and Athens. «My knee is responding exceptionally well to training, which becomes more intensive day after day,» said Daniilidou. «I will never forget the moments I enjoyed four years ago during the Olympics in Athens. I wish to relive that experience and that is why I will do everything to be present in Beijing.» Daniilidou dropped three places to No 47 in the world rankings due to her forced absence from the game, but she is hoping to recover and have a decent show in Beijing. She is also planning to participate in the high-profile Vogue Athens Open 2008 tournament at the Athens Tennis Club this coming September. It would be her first performance in Athens since the 2004 Olympics.
