New era is dawning for AEK’s basketball

The AEK basketball club is making a new start following the recent elections that have brought a hardcore fan club to its administration and has appointed coach Costas Flevarakis for the new season. After the departure of investor Dimitris Drosos, now expected to take over at the PAOK basketball cub, AEK was at risk of bankruptcy. The club’s amateur division elections brought the emergence of a new president, Dimitris Hatzichristos, who heads the «Original» fan club of AEK. Over the last couple of weeks he has tried to put the basketball club in order and on Wednesday made an agreement with former PAOK coach Flevarakis for the 2008-2009 period. He is also close to securing the services of player Nikos Hatzis for another year, although the Kalamata-born guard had intended to leave the club. «AEK’s proposal is a great honor for me and this is why I accepted it,» said Flevarakis, who last year coached Polish side Polpak. «We will all try to take the team out of the difficult position in which it has found itself recently.» Flevarakis is also the national coach of Sweden. He has had coaching spells at Panellinios and Makedonikos as well as clubs in Sweden and Cyprus.
