Greeks lead World 420 Sailing Championship

The World 420 Sailing Championship is turning into a Greek-Italian battle because, with the completion of the first three races, the top four boats in the Open category consist of two Greek and two Italians. Being held off the coast of Athens, the event has drawn the attention of the global sailing community, but it is a Greek boat that is leading the race: Vassilis Papoutsoglou and Akilas Drougas are the leading crew with 18 penalty points, thanks to their top spot in yesterday’s battle with the wind and the waves, taking over from another Greek pair, Andreas and Triantafyllos Bakatsias, who had led until yesterday morning, after the first two races. Up in second place are Italians Edoardo Mancinelli and Lorenzo de Felice with 27 points, followed by Michalis Mileos and Evangelos Mitakis with 32 and Giovanni Meloni and Alessandro Gemini with 38. The latter finished second in yesterday’s race. Over 350 athletes from all five continents are participating, with the event set to finish on Thursday.
