New leaders in the 420 Worlds, with just one day left to go

The lead changed yesterday in the World 420 Sailing Championship, as the boat of Greeks Michalis Mileos and Vangelis Mitakis overtook that of Vassilis Papoutsoglou and Akilas Drougas. The Mileos-Mitakis pair won one of the three races yesterday and lead the overall standings in the Open category with 49 penalty points, while fellow Greeks Papoutsoglou and Drougas follow with 50 points. The Italian pair of Edoardo Mancinelli and Lorenzo de Felice moved up to third with 59 points, while New Zealanders Simon Cooke and Scott Illingworth won the other two races of the day to rise into fourth place with 72 points. «Today was quite a difficult day as it was very windy. We had a conservative race,» said Mileos. «We are of course happy we have taken the lead and we are hoping to maintain it tomorrow so that we get to win the gold medal,» he stated yesterday. The championship concludes today. The Kalaitzidou sisters (Katerina and Sofia) remain in the lead in the women’s category with 36 penalty points, well ahead of second-placed Gil Cohen and Adva Kremer with 54 points. Winds reached a speed of 30 miles per hour, resulting in minor injuries to four athletes. The weather favored crews who had trained under similar conditions.
