IOC medical director speaks
International Olympic Committee (IOC) medical director Patrick Schamasch testified yesterday at a judicial investigation into a spate of 15 doping cases involving Greek athletes, including Tassos Gousis and Fani Halkia. Schamasch, who gave evidence to Athens prosecutor Costas Simitzoglou, said he had confidence in the Greek probe. «The Greek authorities are doing very well and I’m sure that will help, you know, (find) the truth,» Schamasch said after testifying for more than an hour at the prosecutor’s office. Gousis was due to testify at the inquiry later yesterday, while Halkia is expected to appear before the prosecutor later this week. In the wake of the scandal, the IOC filed a lawsuit against Halkia’s coach, Giorgos Panayiotopoulos, requesting he be prosecuted in Greece. (AP)
