Top pair continue with easy victories

Panathinaikos and Olympiakos continued with wins in the A1 basketball league but the match of the weekend was Panionios’s triumph at AEK yesterday. The Nea Smyrni club, which is also involved in this season’s Euroleague, won 85-87 in overtime having equalized at the end of regulation time with a couple of free throws for a foul that was seemingly given just after time, while AEK was leading 73-71. AEK registered an official protest about the incident, while projectiles were thrown from the stands. Panathinaikos breezed past visiting Larissa 102-58, while Olympiakos had a somewhat harder job at Olympia Larissas though it won 66-82. In the other games, Panellinios impressed PAOK with a 60-74 win in Thessaloniki; Aris dismissed visitors Aegaleo 75-57 and Maroussi scored its first win, downing Kolossos 82-67. The match between Kavala and Trikala was postponed as the host has not yet secured its licence to compete in top flight play. After scoring two wins in three games, with only Panionios losing, the Greek teams will play their second match in the Euroleague this week. Panionios hosts champion CSKA Moscow on Wednesday, and then on Thursday Olympiakos entertains Spain’s Unicaja Malaga and Panathinaikos travels to Barcelona.
