A heavy defeat in handball

The men’s national handball team suffered a six-goal defeat at home to Hungary yesterday in its opening game for the European Championship qualifying. Greece lost 21-27 after going down 9-16 at the end of the first half. It was that poor first period (during which Greece trailed by up to nine goals) that doomed the host in the northern town of Komotini to its first home loss after going unbeaten for 14 games in Greece. The national team’s next game for the qualifying group is in Finland on Sunday. Its next home game is on November 30 against Slovakia. The top two qualify from the group of five that also includes Croatia.
